Smarter Balanced Late Start State Testing Coming to Emerald Ridge High School in April/May

Beginning on Tuesday, April 26th, all sophomores (10th graders) will take the Smarter Balanced ELA test. This is a 2-day test. All students must complete both days of testing to receive an eligible score.

In mid-May, all sophomores will take the Smarter Balanced math test, and all Juniors (11th graders) will take the WCAS (Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science).

Results from these tests will provide a more accurate picture for both students and parents related to career and college readiness. Results from the Smarter Balanced tests can also be used to fulfill both the ELA and Math Pathway, which is one of three graduation requirements for all students.

Another advantage to taking the Smarter Balanced and WCAS tests is that these tests carry credit retrieval options for students who score high enough to demonstrate proficiency as a credit replacement for eligible classes they may have previously failed to earn credit for.

Some awards given Senior year can use SBAC scores in lieu of SAT/ACT scores.

Juniors and Seniors who have not yet met their Graduation Pathway requirement, or are seeking to earn additional credits, also have the option to take the Smarter Balanced ELA and/or Math test.

Late Start testing for Smarter Balanced ELA test is as follows:

Tuesday, April 26th is the ELA CAT (Computer Adaptive test)- 90 minute Late Start

Wednesday, April 27th is the ELA PT (Performance Task)-140 minute Late Start

All students taking the ELA CAT on Tuesday, April 26th are encouraged to bring plug in ear buds or headphones if available (no blue tooth devices). Students MUST bring their PSD issued laptop, fully charged on the morning of testing.

Late Start testing for the Smarter Balanced Math and WCAS test is as follows:

Tuesday, May 17th is the Math CAT/PT (Computer Adaptive and Performance Task)-140 minute Late Start

Wednesday, May 18th is the WCAS (Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science-Juniors Only)-140 minute Late Start

Please Note: All Running Start Juniors (full or part-time) are required to take the WCAS.

Testing options are available for Running Start students only at 8:15 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. in the ERHS library. All RS students will test in the ERHS library.
