Smarter
Balanced Late Start State Testing Coming to Emerald Ridge High School in
April/May
Beginning on Tuesday, April 26th, all
sophomores (10th graders) will take the Smarter Balanced ELA
test. This is a 2-day test. All students must complete both days of testing
to receive an eligible score.
In mid-May, all sophomores will take the Smarter Balanced
math test, and all Juniors (11th graders) will take the WCAS
(Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science).
Results from these tests will provide a more accurate
picture for both students and parents related to career and college readiness.
Results from the Smarter Balanced tests can also be used to fulfill both the
ELA and Math Pathway, which is one of three graduation requirements for all
students.
Another advantage to taking the Smarter Balanced and WCAS
tests is that these tests carry credit retrieval options for students who score
high enough to demonstrate proficiency as a credit replacement for eligible
classes they may have previously failed to earn credit for.
Some awards given Senior year can use SBAC scores in lieu of
SAT/ACT scores.
Juniors and Seniors who have not yet met their Graduation
Pathway requirement, or are seeking to earn additional credits, also have
the option to take the Smarter Balanced ELA and/or Math test.

follows:
Tuesday, April 26th is the ELA CAT (Computer
Adaptive test)- 90 minute Late Start
